1. Cost Effective: Swamp coolers in general are extremely cost effective. The estimated cost is ¼ that of refrigerated air. The power consumption is limited to the fan and water pump as opposed to an air conditioner's compressor, pump and blower. The NewAir AF-321 Swamp Cooler runs on only 85 watts of power. That's the same amount of power as a light bulb. It also does not use a water pump, but just a small motor to rotate the cooling pad. This means it uses less power than swamp coolers with water pumps and is quieter as well.
2. Cheap to Install: Swamp coolers only cost 1/8 to 1/2 the price it costs to install a traditional air conditioner. The NewAir AF-321 Swamp Cooler does not need to be installed at all. The pumps themselves are either oil-less or oil-lubricated and the pumps are one or two cylinder and singe of two-stage compressors .... and this last statement is the reason most wood workers don't have an air compressor, because they sound complicated.
Some of the useful terms that you should know about when looking for a compressor include: PSI - Pounds per square inch, CFM - Cubic feet per minute, Duty Cycle - is the amount of time a compressor can run compared to the amount of rest time (storage tank) over a 30 minute period ... such as it can operate for 10 minutes, then rest for 20 without creating significant head wear, Single Stage - is where the compression piston compresses all the air in one stroke, Two Stage - is where there are two pistons that work together to compress the air. (Generally a two stage requires less horse power, and produces less heat).
As a rule, the types of tools that are harder on air volumes are those which run continuously like sanders, and grinders and cutters. Tools that require less cycling are tools that run intermittently like nailers, staplers and in some cases drills or even sprayers.

Air compressors work in a way that they increase how much air is available in a defined space. They pack in the air, this increases the air pressure and then a force is produced which can be used in a manner of ways, from manufacturing to within industry to commercial and personal uses.
If you think of your lung as being a compressor, this is a good analogy as they both work in the same way. So when you take a deep breath, the amount of air pressure in your lungs is increased and this acts as a compressor containing pressurised air. This built-up pressure can then be used as force to blow out a flame, for example.
Man made compressors of air fall into two categories, positive displacement or dynamic and each have been given a naming convention which relates to the way they operate. A positive displacement air compressor operates by filling up the air compartment and then releasing it. Within this category there are three major types of positive displacement ones and these are reciprocating, rotary screw and rotary sliding vane. A dynamic air compressor uses a different method to operate as a rotating device, this is the method used to accelerate the air and then decelerate it. The speed at which the air is travelling is used as the force this time and helps to build up the air pressure. If you have heard of a centrifugal, this is a type of dynamic compressor.
